The CEREC Process

The primary benefit of a CEREC dental crown is that the entire process takes place within a single appointment. Traditional dental crowns have always required multiple appointments so that the crown can be crafted at an off-site lab, whereas CEREC crowns are made right there at your dentist’s office. CEREC crowns are crafted from ceramic and can be utilized to restore teeth that have been compromised due to severe decay, which are misshapen or broken. This is not any different from a traditional crown. X-rays will be taken with additional treatment recommended, if necessary (such as a root canal), and your tooth will still need to be filed just as it would with a traditional crown. The primary differences with the CEREC same-day crown process are as follows:

• An intraoral scanner will be used to record images of your teeth, and a digital impression will be taken. There is no need for a physical mold.
• This digital impression will then be sent to an on-site CAD/CAM machine that digitally creates the tooth restoration (in this case, a crown).
• This digital restoration is then sent to an additional machine (also on-site) that crafts the physical crown from a ceramic block. This milling machine takes about 15 minutes to complete the process.
• Once the crown has been crafted, your dentist will polish it and match the shade to your natural teeth before cementing it to your tooth.
